I have been collected leather belts from thrift stores, for this very thing!

I had to wait for the chair!

The chair finally came my way!

From Belt Chair

After I shined the wood up, I took off the seat!

From Belt Chair

My trusted basket of leather belts, don’t you have one?

From Belt Chair

Then I was a’belt weaving away!

From Belt Chair

Not sure if I will keep the belts on this chair or not yet…

as well if I should cut the ends of the belt off or let them hang!

From Belt Chair

Love how the colors in the belts bring out the colors in the wood!

Belt Weave!

From Belt Chair

I think this technique turns a plain chair into a conversation/center/art piece!

I love the chair so much…I think I am not going to leave the belts on it as the shape of the back and the wood speak for themselves.

So, I will go back to waiting for the perfect chair again!

I will go back to my Upcycle Arts & Crafts projects…

But these days I am spending time to get stuff ready for a new home!

A Mid Century Beauty!

I thought I would to strip and refinish some of my old finds…but found something that I is my secret love.

Okay, the top is made of Formica, but did refinish the wood legs!

Is is bad that I am falling for Formica?

Speaking of Formica…

Shining these guys on…so made my happy today!

Easy Peasy and such good looks!

Don’t be afraid of nicks & stains…all they are saying is “We have been loved, now love us again!”

UPDATE!  WE OPENED OUR OWN ONLINE STORE!

Please visit and shop if you are so inclined at:  Our Own Big World!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Although, I have always liked the funkiness or smooth lines of mid century stuff, my usual genre of antique is older, rusty and usually made of metal!

But since we started to look at homes to buy in Florida, we realized the one we will buy will most likely be one from the Mid Century.  The location we wanted was developed at that time period, so we decided we want to decorate it appropriately!  We finally found the perfect untouched beauty for us!

So now we are in love with all that is Mid Century Matter!

While things get worked on (and in an un-updated home built in 1964 there will be work needed)…

WE GO SHOPPING!

We love a good deal…and will take the time to search for it, most likely at thrift stores, flea markets, antique stores, auctions, yard sales, estate sales and antique fairs!

Here are some of our recent finds!

From My Finds!

Right now these are in my loft area sitting just like this, and I get tickled every time I walk up the stairs!

From My Finds!

For the Silver Band Chip & Dip, Atomic Star Coffee Decanter & Wood Handle 2 Tiered Dessert Tray I gathered the lowest prices I found on the exact or similar items online (without shipping costs).

Online Cost  = $45.00.
Our Cost = $7.00!

Every respectable Mid Century Home needs a Sunburst Clock!

From My Finds!

Similar ones online = $75.00.
Our Cost = $16.00 (which I got down from$ 20.00 because I will need to fix it a bit)!

Even though we do not have records anymore…we fell in love with this number!

From My Finds!

Look in other photos, to see the cute little Sunburst on the sides better!

Similar ones online = $65.00.
Our Cost = $8.00!

Jim has shown interest in a Vintage Travel Bar for quite a while now.

From My Finds!

So we had to pick up this one, that allowed for the morning after as well.

From My Finds!

We thought The Executair 720C was a Bar and Coffee Travel Case, but in my research the original piece was mostly just coffee. We happen to like it as is…drinkies for the evening and coffee for the morning after!

Similar online = $25.00.
Our Cost = $5.00!

And for the Bar at Home!

From My Finds!

The Penguin Hot or Cold Bucket…we like to call it our new Ice Bucket! This particular piece is all over the internet!

The lowest price online = $20.00.
Our Cost = $4.00!

Another time piece…

From My Finds!

Could not pass up the bigness (Oh, okay…or the price) of this industrial most likely mid century clock!

Similar ones Online = $90.00
Our Cost = $7.00 (but ours has hand written additions to the face that may take off some of the value…but for 7 bucks…who cares!)

A Couple more morsels…

From My Finds!

1960’s Wharfedale W20D Speakers for Jim’s more modern stereo!

And everyone needs a Kromex 2 Tier Dessert Tray!

Prices Online = $92.00
Our Cost: $9.00 (Mind you, Jim bought both of these!)

And now comes the Funky Fun Find!

From My Finds!

Who knew there was something called “Popcorn Art?”

Well, I do now and I own 2 pieces…love them!

Similar items Online = $62.00
Our Cost = $7.00 (talked down from $10.00)!

Now on to my current Fav…Mid Century Lamps!

From My Finds!

This one is our newest and most expensive addition! It is  hard to find the same exact ones I have online, as there are so many cool similar designs though!  They varied so much in price, for ones in pairs, ones without shades, and ones outrageously overpriced…so I just took an average online price.

Similar Ones Online = $50.00
Our Cost = $16.50 (1/2 off original antique store price sale)!

Okay the following is not a new one, but I had to add it in this post!

From My Finds!

This is my baby…love her! A spontaneous buy at an auction in Townsend, Vermont!

Similar Ones Online = $50.00
Our Cost = $6.00

And now our Mad Men ensemble!

From My Finds!

No ciggies for Jim, but he does enjoy a cigar now and then (uh, outside).

Jim bought the 1998 Lammhult Cinema Chair at a tag sale (New England’s way of saying Yard or Garage sale) last year in posh Manchester, VT.

The LARGE lamp and end tables are newbies!

The chair is not mid century, but it fits in!
Current Price new = $1500.00!
Recently Sold at Auction = $600.00!
Our Price = $5.00 (but I must say the leather has a some damage…can be fixed though)!

The lamp was one of my recent finds here in Fort Pierce, FL!
Similar ones online = $50.00
Our Price = $10.00

We bought this pair of end tables at a Vero Beach Auction!
Similar online prices = $100.00
Our Cost = $20.00 (They do need some love).

And soon to be ours!

Recently Sold at Vero Beach Location = $550.00
Our Cost = $100.00 (plus $35.00 for deliver & thanks for our Realtor for it for us until we really do own the place, but 100.00 off original price because I am buying it on 1/2 Off Monday)!

So far we spent =$216.00 (minus the Lammhult Cinema Chair) for what would have at least cost $1174.00 retail!

We still have a couch, 2 chairs, 2 coffee tables to go and a lot of light fixtures…not sure if I can stay within our very low-budget as these items are definitely higher priced!   Of course, dessert trays, coffee decanters, ice buckets and traveling bars were not originally included in that budget!

In hopes of saving some money, I am already making art/decor and 2 hanging lamps for the house!  Check my future posts to see how I made them…and if they even came out decent enough to use!

Ha, after this recent experience of our Mid Century Hunt, both Jim and I feel I can buy extras as I find them (and maybe make extras), and start my own Mid Century Shopito!

We will See….

UPDATE….WE DID OPEN AN ONLINE STORE!

YOU CAN FIND MID-CENTURY MATTER AND SO MUCH MORE AT:  Our Own Big World!

(*Note to those who are wondering…this will not be our permanent home.)

I have been using food jars to store my crafting and arts bit and pieces….

but could no longer handle the glass not being clear and the branding on the tops!

SO…FIXED THAT!

From Jars & Swirly Love Piece

I went crazy with the yellow, Yes…

But yellow IS awesome!

That was after I soaked and removed the labels and then used “Goof Off” to take off any date stamps and left over label glue!

From Jars & Swirly Love Piece

I know the trend is to paint the item glued on top too…

But I like the my toppers in the NUDE!

From Jars & Swirly Love Pieceof my toppers have meaning to me too!

And some of the toppers even have meaning to me!

From Jars & Swirly Love Piece

Okay, just one!

Like the green VW Bug is a gift I gave my husband as a joke, because we play “Slug Bug” all the time!

Note: We only do old bugs & buses…other wise we would be too bruised!

But I do have to say I LOVE the doll hands….funky in a creepy way!

Truth…

I am keeping 3 of them, and I decided to put the two with old knobs in it in my shopito to see if I can sell some old inventory that I haven’t used! Paint it, shine, put it in a fun bottle…and maybe it will sell!

NOW…

The below piece I did not dedicate a whole post to because I did not photograph it along the way.

From Jars & Swirly Love Piece

It all stemmed from making the “flowers” for a wreath I made in a previous post.

Upcycle Wreath!

From How To – Wreath

Cutting, folding and rolling magazine paper flowers takes a lot of time!

From How To – Wreath

But the work was well worth it because…

I love with swirly, whirley, twirly look to them!

From Jars & Swirly Love Piece

I had a wood photo piece that  needed a punch of texture…

So, added felt & magazine paper loves on it!

Completing my Swirly, Twirly, Whirley Bundle of Fun!

Now, to my shopito to add, move around, and hopefully sell the hell out of…

So this is what I did while the rain was pounding down and wind whipping around…

From 20120827_0026

During Tropical Storm Isaac hitting my neck of the woods!

From Thumbtack Ball

And with being stuck inside for two days in a row…I do think the glass of wine was essential!

All you need is…

1) Styrofoam Ball
2) Thumbtacks
3) If you want extra decorations…you can use cute brads.
4) You shouldn’t need glue, but to make them really secure you can use glue of any kind.
5) Time and really, not even tons of it!
6) Wine isn’t really essential!

I am obsessed and I am okay with it.

Because I have decorative ball collecting rules!

1)  Must not have one like it

2)  Must pay under $6.00, but usually under $5.00)!

Now back to waiting for the Tropical Storm to really pass Southern Florida!

Prayers and good thoughts go out to wherever that thing will hit land!

Everyone loves a Puppet!

So, make one…or two!

And then…

Write a puppet play!

When all said and done…

You have several activities and lots of fun!

I used pre-made puppet packets from Michael’s that I bought for cheap!

But of course you can use old socks, bits and pieces of stuff around the house and glue to make your own puppets!

Ha, I just made one with a sock my brother left behind! An old sock, paper and a piece of twine!

I like to call him…

I always try to be prepared with activities to do when with my young nieces and nephew!

And this past trip to California gave me another chance for us to play together again!

So…for some CLEAN fun we made some SOAP CLOUDS!

Yes, I said…SOAP CLOUDS!

And then when we were done…we made small shaped soaps!

Oh yes, we did!

Here’s is how we did it!

1) Get a bar of IVORY soap…for every child (of any age)!

2) Place a bar of soap on paper towel in a microwave!

From Soap Clouds

Yes, I said…place a bar of IVORY soap on a paper towel in a microwave.

Take out the turn table and put the time for around 2.5 minutes (stop when it looks ready to you).

3) Watch the bar of soap grow into a “cloud!”

From Soap Clouds

4) Play with Soap Cloud!

5) Then start mushing it down to a powdery consistency!

6) Add water to make it more liquid…but not too much water!

From Soap Clouds

7) Put into forms (we used their Mom’s cookie cutters)! And let sit until completely dry.

8) And now you have your own personally shaped soaps!

A very cool, messy but clean, and fun activity…that keeps the kids busy for quite some time!

And the kitchen smells like nice clean soap afterwards!

Have not been making things lately, so I thought I would do a short post about my dreams.

I am the dreamiest girl ever!

Really…

I am a dreaming fool!

And I not only dream a lot, but I remember them as well, in detail, mind you!

And even, sometimes I can recall several dreams a night.

Some are similar dreams that I have had all my life.

Like the losing control of a slow-moving car/the steering goes out dreams.

Or the flying dreams.  I love the flying dreams.  I used to hide that I could fly, now in my dreams I show it off!

Or the my 40-something brother is a little kid dreams.

But others provide story lines that books and movies are made of…really!

So much, I based a children’s adventure mystery novel on one of my dreams.

I started it 8-9 years ago, and then I met Jim, and  put it aside.  Picked it up again, and now I am almost done.

This dream made so much of an impact on our lives, that we went to the Czech Republic for our honeymoon.  That is where the dream, I mean, book is based.

I had never been to the Czech Republic, why oh why was I dreaming about it?

My recent dreams have included lots of travel, a marriage and death of a friend, my little little brother, Jim driving down the wrong side on a busy freeway, buying antiques from an old gas station, exchanging addresses with a little girl in Honduras so we can keep in touch, trying to get on a bus in some crazy busy foreign country, cruise down the coast of Peru, under water pods, hurricane in Mexico…

Shall I go on?

Boy scouts on foreign beaches, my Mom, jumping off a moving collective, Jim losing control of a wagon, meeting an old couple that had a gondola, and being in school…like a private uniform wearing elementary school.

Last night I was on a road trip with my Mother In-Law!  Oh, the places I go and the people I hang out with…in my dreams!

I recently started emailing the dreams to my husband, just to write them down.  Hence, why I am telling you about them!

I am a bit of a free spirit, but I did not know I really live in a dream world!

At night I do!

Dream on, My Friends, Dream On!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————

I asked for hints for a handmade gift, and I got Big Sur and the number 7!

WHAT THE WHAT?

I racked my mind and kept my eyes out for 7’s and anything Big Sur (Hello, I live in Florida, Big Sur is in California)!

I found it hard to find decorative numbers, if it is not for the front of your house.   So when I found a big black ceramic 7 I had to grab it.

It sat around for quite awhile trying to motivate me to do something with it.  Nothing was coming to mind!

Then at a flea market, my husband came across a 1966 arial map of mid-coastal California! Yes, with Big Sur smack dab in the middle!

I grabbed it!

So, I had the 7 and the map…what to do?  I went to my map pinterest board to see what I could find!

Yippy, I saw a map used as a mat in a frame!  How could I have forgotten about that?

HERE IS HOW I MADE THE MAP MAT FOR FRAMES:

First, the things you will need:

–  Map

– Frame

– Mat (you can either make your own or not even use one)

– Scissors / X-Acto knife

– Graphics & Printer

Now lets Mat Our Map!

From Old Map Framed

1)  Cut the part of map you want to use.

Hint: If there is a special place…put it in a corner of the mat.

From Old Map Framed

2) This is how I incorporated the 7 into the piece!

I found different graphics of 7s and then printed them out on sample paper to make sure they got on the right spots of the map. Then I printed them out on the map.

From Old Map Framed

3) Once you have your map ready, cut the center out.

Hint: Just cut an “X” from corner to corner and you can just bend back the pieces.

This is my sample map and I cut the edges off to fit in the frame better. But the final map I used had very thin paper, so I just folded the pieces over.

I do not like to completely cut/destroy things in case the person buying or receiving my stuff, can change it around if they like.

From Old Map Framed

4) Firmly fold down the map around the mat.

I did not glue it down, because the frame would securely hold it in.

From Old Map Framed

5) And then you are done!

I ended with two of them, since I did a “practice” run first!

The practice one is done with scrapbook paper I got on sale for 25 Cents! I hope someone else likes the number 7!

From Old Map Framed

BIG SUR!

I love how there is a circle about Big Sur too!

From Old Map Framed

And now you have a “something special” frame!

We wish the recipients of this frame the happiest life together!

By the way, I wrote a special date on the back of the number 7 for them!
