I just learned that word. Trash and fashion=Art? Another phrase for it is Junk Art. Whatever you want to call it, it is art made from what most people would call garbage.

A lot of my art is made with stuff I found for free or thrifted or gifted….but some of the stuff for these projects are downright trashy garbage. The worst of all worse garbage, plastics found on a beach where I wish all Sea Plastics went to die.

(PHOTO: One particular bad plastic garbage day at what I now call “Plastics Beach”.

Last month my hub and I went for a drive and without our knowledge we ended up on what may be the most sea garbage filled beach on the island. It’s in a corner of a bay and the wind and tide seem to go straight to the particular area of the beach. I was overwhelmed with the amount of it all. I didn’t just see garbage. I saw color and I saw childhood laughter. And even though I didn’t know it at the time, I saw potential. That place never left my mind, so much so, we we went back. This time, I was prepared mentally and with reusable shopping bags.

(PHOTO: My sweet husband collecting plastics and beachcombing)

This time to “Plastics Beach” it wasn’t as bad, by “not as bad”, I mean there was less bigger pieces. It was still very bad. I focused on collecting the most colorful plastics. While I was on the hunt, I noticed some big black bags at the edge of the beach in the trees. I assumed they were filled with the beach garbage. This made me feel good, but I also wondered what colorful fun things could I find inside them. Don’t worry, I did not open them. They are destined for the dump for the rest of their long plastic life.

(PHOTO: This is what we brought home in our 4 large reusable shopping bags)

I cleaned every single piece, a lot to be cleaned again. While doing this, I thought of the price of art, even art made from free stuff. It took hours to do the initial clean. I can use old, scratched, marked, broken things for art, but I can’t use dirty stuff with sand embeddeded in it with the potential to smell over time. A lot of this time consuming. Even though, I’m not big on selling my art, I support artists that do and their prices. Oh, I will sell my art, just ask me. Anyway, I recently picked an old frame out of the trash area of my apartment building. Do you see the trashy thing going here? And here is me playing with my idea of art.

(PHOTO: The first juxtaposition of pieces inside of the frame.)
(PHOTO: I almost love this view of the piece better)

I really like it. I go through many processes with my pieces. Here is where I was before creating the one above (mind you it is not done…the things are in a box now), I recently went on a trip to where I got things for cheap or were gifted them. Fun, bright, cheerful things, including beads, miniature stuff, and vintage cabochons, but not limited to that. Here is where I went with those items when I got home.

(PHOTO: I put all the stuffy things together, added items I had already and this is what I got.)
(PHOTO: I love the neon and brightness of this piece and I will make smaller versions of it when I can thrift some fun frames.)

If you haven’t seen my art, besides using upcycled materials, I love texture for the eyes and hands. I love surprises to be found. I love that I see art when others see magazines, belts, twine, and garbage. I love that I can see how to use things in unconventional ways, like beads not beaded, a belt buckled around a canvas, old rough twine in macrame, and torn maps not used for directions.

(PHOTO: My art in my home)

Here are other versions of pieces I may do with my plastic beach finds….

(PHOTO: I love the idea of one or two bold colors. So, yes, I love this small 5×7 piece, but if I do it I will paint the frame a brighter blue.)
(PHOTO: So, I love anything round, circular, spherical, and globular including balls, orbs, globes sport supplies, decor, plastic caps and so on. This piece is a mixture of all found or saved round things. Honestly, I’m notot as fond of this piece.)

Since I’m on this maximalism, lots of stuff in one piece journey, yesterday I was playing more with some of the beads and cabochons I got at General Bead in SF recently (and vintage plastics from a friend there too). Also, I recently have been enamored with miniatures, and bought some while traveling and at a store near my apartment. Yes, new stuff. Ack, but give me a break, they are so cute. Look!

(PHOTO: I Call this “Bunny Bubbles #Yellow)
(PHOTO: See the Adorable tiny Bunny? It is actually what is called an “Nail Ornament)
(PHOTO: I call this “Bear Bubbles #Purple.) (Sorry for the bad photo.)
(PHOTO: But look at the bears…this time 2 sizes!) (Squeeee!)

Okay, before you go crazy making orders and wanting to buy…none of these are made yet! 😉

But I did just paint the large frame, and I am looking for a back to adhere items safely to it. Will update this post when I’m done!

Once again, Thanks for visiting… My Gnome Little World!!

PURGE

I feel I need to purge toxic balls of words that come at me now and then. I delete those words a lot, but they come at me again and again. So, I am taking those words, and adding my own in All CAPS AND BOLD. Right Here, Right Now. I feel it may help me purge the word cancer that lives inside me.

The written word sent quickly.

Filled with emotion.

So easy to slap down words with your thumbs, or index finger like I do.

Some bring joy, laughter, love

Some don’t.

We played Nice But What Was Under the Surface? (Painting by Cecily Brown)

I’m placing these photographs to hopefully convey beautiful chaos, lovely negativity, awesome anger, and general all around pretty pettiness that happens in life. Although the photos are my own, they may be of other people’s work.

What is below the layers?
(Store Logo)

Just last night I plunged backward into the sea 7 times to help remove negativity. But yet, negativity keeps on coming. Last night I figured it out, you cannot plunge negativity away, but you may be able to purge it.

I wrote the words. They are out.
Different Pieces together Make a Whole (Street art mural San Juan, PR)
I turned my words into art, Word Art.
And if only we could all accept. (Art in an exhibit at the PR Contemporary Art Museum)
For you to see, but for me only to know. It’s my own rainbow to bare.
So many layers.
So many Complications
It Runs Deep (Toxic pollution in a sidewalk crack)
Let it blur so much it becomes invisible.
Not locking it up nor holding it inside anymore.

If I could throw up emotions, feelings, words, and even memories…I would be sticking a toothbrush down my throat right now. But I can’t, so this is my way of purging them all. I call it art. Some art isn’t pretty. Truth isn’t either.

Thank you for visiting my darker than normal Gnome Little World.

Webbed Map of Life
(Photo: In the works.)

I don’t have any photos of the beginning of this piece, but I can tell I did not have this end in mind. But, here is a video of the very start.

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTREYCYHm/

After I decided to use an old map to tear up, I was thinking of amap of life. Then when I was doing the needlepoint it looked like Morse code, so I decided to sew in words that have to do with living life. I finished the 5 Strips and there it sat for a couple of months. I was in a rut, I didn’t create.

(Photo: What word do you see?)

While we were packing for the move, I packed in the strips along with some supplies. Then we moved and then I was so moved to create again.

(Photo: We make ties to people to places and even to things.)

I needed something for structure and to represent the steady stuff, the structure of our lives. Wood was the strength needed and pink was the perfect amount of innocence and love.

(Photo: Upcycled Art of Life)

I used floss because it has 6 threads that brings it together to be. No one stands on their own.

Ok, and I had plenty of it.

(Photo: We are all interconnected.)

The art piece told me what to do with the hanging floss as soon as I held it up. All the hanging floss had to be connected to each other. Some webs may look chaotic, but there is a method in the madness. Life looks a mess, but maybe that is as it should be.

(Photo: It’s a delicate piece…Just like Life.)

Thank you for visiting My Gnome Little World.

Picking.    Picking as in finding things for a way low price.

20190127_130947

My super power is Second Hand Picking.

Got this on a cross country trip where everything I could fit in a good size box was $1.00. Not one dollar for each piece, but $1.00 for the entire box of stuff!

20190109_110807

My #1 Back Up Super Power is Making Things/Art/Decor out of old stuff.

Like my belt art above.

20190109_104112

My #2 Back up Super Power is the ability to fix things up.

I buy low, fix it up, and then eventually sell it for a handful more.

This the Vintage Homecrest set was all just my Super Picking Power. The price was so low, I got it even though at the time I did not have room for it.  I made room for it!

20190131_165812

Until I had to sell that too.

We move a lot. I use my Picking Powers to furnish yet another new place.  Shine it Up, Fix It, Use it and then Sell it.  I could make a living off of it, but we move too much.

20190112_130455

Ok, Some things I just pick because I think they are cool. I usually sell sooner or later before a move like at a yard sale, or the sometime Antique Fairs, or I have even been known to rent a booth in Antique Malls.

20190128_163936

We do have a home, so some stuff does get to live there, but this nice leather suitcase did not because we have enough vintage suitcases there.

20190205_124001

This would be one of my projects that I did not get to do.  I also do projects to sell.  Take a look see at a previous blog post about my Upcylced Bars:  https://ourownbigworld.com/2018/11/28/a-bit-bar-cart-crazy/

All this one needed was paint. I even already paid my nieces to sand them!

20181014_065704

This was part of my set up at an Antique Market.  I love stuff and glad I am not attached it all.  All above sold, even those funky Clown Shoes!

20190127_100517

These two I saved from selling and they now have a FURever home in our Gnomad Pad.

20190211_134312

In our last place, this was my work room, a game room and where most of the stuff for sale lived. It has all moved on now, living a 3rd, 4th or 5th life.

The only Picking I do now is from the beach.

20190301_191149Where we live, doesn’t have much for my Super 2nd Hand Picking Powers…so I am Relying on My Other Back Up Super Powers to Turn things like these into other stuff.

IMG_20190330_185848951

If I figure it out, I will share with you.

Until then, thanks for visiting.

And just so you know, I get to pick a lot back where my Gnomade Pad is when we visit.  So if you are looking for that something special, ask me and I will keep an eye out for it for you!

My mind rolls around these visions in my head as the sea rolls around glass, making it solid so you can’t see through it, you just see it.

Thank you for allowing me this musings.  I hope you enjoy and will visit again.

We moved closer to the In-laws and I developed a hang up for a pile of old fence boards that have sat on their side yard for ever.

I finally got brave and asked if I could have some and then My Big Hang Up Started.

Okay it started with this…

Rack6 (2)

I picked up this cool piece of wood and then made this necklace holder from it over a year ago

I make art from old leather belts, so I have a lot of belt buckles hanging around.

And then I made this out of the other half of the wood.  Rack4 (2).jpg

I realized I like making hanging racks out of interesting and unusual bits and pieces.  Although hard to tell between my cool old kitchen gadgets, the rack is made from old metal water facet knobs and big butterfly screws.

So once I had the fence boards…The Hand Ups Began!  I started to dig around in my widgets, gadgets, screws, hooks and thingies.

Racks8

I went first to my mass amount of belt buckles and made a couple of my mini necklace holders.

Rack7

I have been noticing mermaids a lot lately because my older sister who was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer last year loves them.   So, I have mermaids around and made this beachy themed key and coat rack.

Racks9.jpg

I dug deep and found these huge screw things with a nuclear-ish symbol on the ends.  I loved them and finally found a project for them!  They would make great “hooks” for a coat/jewelry rack!

Rack3

I had more wood but was running out of ideas, so one day I really dug through my stuff and I did not even know I had these little red hooks.  I love the bright color against the awesome worn wood grain.

20170809_170216 (2)

This one makes a Great Industrial Chic Necklace holder!

I ventured out from just making racks, I made some signs too.

Rack2

Vintage and Ready for Sale.  Original Handmade Art Things made from Vintage Stuff!

Easy to Make your Own and Easier to Buy from Me!

My Favorite sign is the one I made for my brother for sales we do together.

Rack1

I Introduced my brother to the old fence board and now he has his own line of cool things.  Come to one of our sales!

Rack5

I hope to open up an online store again soon too.  So you can shop directly from the comfort of you home!

Thanks for visiting and Come Again!

It all Started with a Large Ball of Twine.

And then Some Gray Yarn.

IMG_20170128_131723_027

And Once the Sticks Got Involved…History Was Made.

I have a big wall that needed decor, so I set to making a big piece.

I knew macrame was going to be part of it, but not exactly sure how.

20170128_145957

I attached the twine and yarn and let it all sink in.

20170130_152342

Then I went for it, but I got stuck on what to do after the first row of Macrame.

IMG_20170129_113631_080

It sat like this for quite a while, but the rolled up yarn and twine at the bottom did give me an idea.  But before I could work on that part, I had to finish the other parts.

IMG_20170131_125300_717

So I continued to make these large macrame knots and my sister described the look as “Lace”.

20170223_093917

I kept going with the big square knots and the “lacey” look.  When I finished I added something a bit different.

20170223_144917

Some Poofs made of Twine!

20170223_115940.jpg

I Made a Lot of Poofs!

IMG_20170130_113946_947

And Not just Twine Poofs, but Grey Yarn Poofs as Well!

IMG_20170223_175544_702

I attached the Poofs and Loved them….all of my Pretty Little Poofs.

IMG_20170223_174559_297

I even added one to the Very Top!

20170223_173456_001

And There You Have It…

Poof…MacraLace!

This one is for my Wall, but if you are Interested in Your Very Own Poof…MacraLace, Please Comment Below.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————

It was the birthday of a new friend…

A new picking/antiquing kind of friend.

We have an eye for similar old things.

So I made her something new from my photos of old things.

A small book of old things.

From 2014 Projects

I first picked the photo, size and then printed them all out!

From 2014 Projects

Cutting them to size was next!

From 2014 Projects

Cutting them included nice pretty corners as well!

From 2014 Projects

I then made the pages of the books.

From 2014 Projects

I attached the photos with double sided thick tape so they stick up a bit from the pages.

From 2014 Projects

I attached all the pages together with cute ribbon, yard and a tiny crown!

From 2014 Projects

And there you have a gift made special for that special someone, new or old, silver or gold!

Some of my photos are framed and for sale at OUR OWN BIG WORLD!

If you see a photo you would like that is not up for sale or you would like a different size,
Please comment here or on the shop.

Happy Day!

Summer Loving…

Is a Great Time to Craft!

And Since Summer is Over…

It is a Great Time to Get Back to Blogging, especially since I have not posted crafts in quite a while!

The following projects will have to do with items in the photos from my last past, HOW WE MAKE A HOUSE A HOME OVER AND OVER AGAIN .

I’m feeling frisky, let’s start in the bedroom!

Get your mind out of the gutter, we just needed some storage! I found this, yes without a drawer, for cheap!

From 2014 Projects

I saw it and had an idea which I had to talk The Hub into, as usual.

Sanding came first…

From 2014 Projects

And then the painting!

From 2014 Projects

Have I ever told you, “I don’t like painting.” But it was worth it, especially with my decision to paint this one area red as it goes with the soda crates I am going to use as storage really well!

Next Decision…

From 2014 Projects

What kind of Knobs?

From 2014 Projects

Neither one of those…
Something Completely Different!

From 2014 Projects

My Dresser, craft storage, make-up and hair do-ing area! Done and Done!

Continuing on with the Bedroom…

From 2014 Projects

The Wall Decor!

Although I have no photos to show how I did this…

From 2014 Projects

I am confident that you can take a needlepoint hoop, material and do it yourself!

The interesting thing is that some of the material I designed myself. Oh yes, I did!

You can see how I did this in one of my first posts on this blog at WHO KNEW?

Don’t mind the bikes…
They were part of the decor for a while!

Now on to the kitchen and the ever-changing lights!

From 2014 Projects

I started out with this yoke double light. I just used two small work lights, but took off the pinching attachments.

From 2014 Projects

I wound the wires around the rings for them to blend in and put the wire in the back of the yoke to hide them there as well.

From 2014 Projects

And there you have it!

But then I had more stuff and got creative…
Again!

From 2014 Projects

This is what you do with an old soda shop crate, an old colander, an old dog chain and a light fixture!

From 2014 Projects

Pretty much straight forward…
Put a hole in the colander, put the light fixture through it and then through the crate and line wire along the center chain.

From 2014 Projects

And there have it, once again.

Now, to the front porch!

From 2014 Projects

It all started with this 75 cent table that was falling apart.

Literally, it is made of particle board which was dripping apart slowly!

From 2014 Projects

I used glue, in the form of Modge Podge and an old book to keep it all together. I decoupaged underneath it where it was also falling apart!

From 2014 Projects

And I painted it.
Again with the painting!

From 2014 Projects

It has sat on my front porch for over 4 months and no more falling apart!

From 2014 Projects

“Awwwwesooome,” if I do say some myself!

The table sits in front of another one of my summer loving projects!

From 2014 Projects

And it all started with these…

From 2014 Projects

Which I painted. What is with all this painting?

In the above photo there are pieces of wood in the background which I put across the seats of the chairs.

From 2014 Projects

On top of the slats I placed lots of pillows (yard sale finds). The seating pillows needing hiding…

So I put a vintage 1970 avocado green round table cloth with fringe on them.

I am sure you are interested in why I went that color and style, right?

Well, it is the only thing I found to match this…

From GnomeShackPorch

Which I already had on the front porch!

But, wait…there is more for the porch.

From 2014 Projects

Look What I did to this thing to match the other things.
Oh so Matchy Matchy…

From 2014 Projects

But not too matchy matchy, right?

And here are a few more touches!

Plain ugly rug that The Hub insisted on buying….

From 2014 Projects

Meet Spray Paint and a Stencil!

From 2014 Projects

Not sure I love the turn out…
But anything is better than that the original fugley thing!

From 2014 Projects

Oh and Look what I did with the tons of twigs that fall in my yard!

From 2014 Projects

Twig Garland!

And yes, I added a mosquito net to the Porch Lounger! Love it, Right?

And I know you will love this too…

From 2014 Projects

So much cuteness mushed together right next to the front door under the maibox…
What a Greeting!

Have fun making your own stuff…
I hope I motivated and inspired you!

GET OUT THERE AND CREATE!

And just to let you know…
I sell old things and things I make from old things!

If you are interested please visit my shop, OUR OWN BIG WORLD!
